Perched on the hill along Riverside Drive, just under the footbridge leading to Carver College of
Medicine, stands Phi Rho Sigma. A historic three-story Tudor home built in the early 1930s to
house University of Iowa medical students.
Less than a quarter mile from Carver College of Medicine and only a 10 minute walk to class,
our home continues its long tradition of supporting medical education by providing affordable,
community focused housing for students pursuing careers in healthcare.
With 23 residents balancing demanding coursework, clinical rotations, late night studying, and early morning rounds, mutual respect is essential to our home.
We live together in a historic Tudor house with students from diverse backgrounds and programs. Our cooperative environment is built on consideration for quiet study time, shared responsibilities, and personal space, creating a supportive place where everyone can focus and succeed.
At the heart of Phi Rho Sigma is connection, and often that connection begins in the kitchen.
Our commercial kitchen and bright dining room bring residents together for shared meals, celebrations, and everyday conversation. Living under one roof encourages meaningful friendships and professional relationships that continue well beyond medical school.
Life in healthcare education is rigorous, but making time to recharge matters.
Residents gather in the spacious living room, on the porch with the grill, or around board games for relaxed evenings at home. From casual get togethers to shared celebrations, Phi Rho Sigma offers a healthy balance of focus, connection, and enjoyment.
Built in the early 1930s, Phi Rho Sigma was created to house medical students at the University of Iowa.
For nearly a century, it has provided dependable housing for students pursuing careers in medicine and health sciences.
Originally a traditional fraternity residence, the house has evolved into a cooperative home serving graduate and healthcare students from varied disciplines.
Its purpose remains clear: practical, affordable housing within walking distance of the medical campus.
